December 10 - December 14
MOUNTAINS 2018 will take place on 10 to 14 December 2018, in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. It will comprise two events: the III Workshop on Sustainable Development in Mountain Environments, and the II International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions. Guided field trips to the region’s mountains will take place on 12 December 2018.
The Workshop aims to present and discuss sustainable management initiatives in mountain environments, involving all actors of these areas. The conference will discuss issues related to linking scientific knowledge and decision-making, including all perspectives to expand and disseminate knowledge about sustainable and integrated management in mountain environments.
Mountains 2016, the first of the series, was organized in Bragança, Portugal. (http://cimo.esa.ipb.pt/mountains2016/). One of the milestones of this event was the launching of the Lusophony Mountain Research Network – LuMont (http://cimo.esa.ipb.pt/LuMont/index.php/en/) to strengthen exchange between Portuguese-speaking countries.
MOUNTAINS 2018, in addition to strengthening exchange among mountain researchers and research institutions from Portuguese-speaking countries, also aims to broaden exchanges between Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Organized by institutions from Brazil, Portugal and Scotland, Mountains 2018 has the support of several national and international organizations related to mountain research. It is expected that more than 200 participants from different countries will attend.
It is anticipated that this event will be a milestone for Brazil and that its results will support the establishment of public policies aiming at sustainable development in mountain regions.
